Attending Events At Pema Kilaya

Thank you for pre-registering for this upcoming Pema Kilaya event. Below you'll find useful information that we hope will help make attending this event even more enjoyable. If there are still questions, please send a quick email to events@pemakilaya.org or leave a message at 206-323-6108.

Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you there.

What to Bring

We have lots of chairs but not many cushions. Bring your favorite sitting cushions, blankets, etc. It's also good to bring a nice cloth to rest your text on as texts should not be placed directly on the floor. If Rinpoche is leading the event, your own khatag to use while making dana offerings to him may also be handy.

We have a water cooler that dispenses hot and cold water and there are usually tea bags available for making a cup of tea. However, there are no vending machines on site. If you would like snacks or some other beverages, please bring them with you. For most events, liquids are allowed in the shrine room if in containers with lids. Please wipe up spills immediately. Eating is not permitted in the shrine room unless it is an official part of the ceremony/event.

There is a small microwave for your use. However, we don't have refrig space nor a lot of storage space to work with. Please take that into consideration.

How to Get Here

Pemakilaya is located on Capitol Hill at 1414 Spring St, Seattle, WA 98104. It's close to Swedish Medical Center and Seattle University. Online map with directions.

If you will be coming by bus, you might find the Metro Bus Trip Planner to be helpful

Parking

Street parking is metered Mon-Sat until 6PM. The Seattle police are very efficient at catching violators.

There is a pay lot at the entrance to PK. It may be used evenings and weekends ONLY for about $5/day. This is your best bet for Saturdays. Note that you have to have the exact amount as payment is made by slipping the money into a slot. No change is returned. Pay promptly as they also are very efficient at catching violators!

Street parking is free on Sunday so this may be your first choice on Sundays.

Getting In

PK is located on the second floor in a corner of Seattle First Baptist Church's building as shown in this picture. Go up the ramp (which is barely visible in the picture) to the door with the blue awning and you will see several door bells. Push the one for Pema Kilaya and someone will come down and let you in. You're there!

Paying

If you have a remaining balance for this event, you may take care of that at the registration table on the day of the event. We can accept cash or checks but, sorry, NOT credit or debit cards! Fortunately, there are several local banks and ATMs in the near vicinity for your convenience.

Texts

Usually, all necessary texts and additional prayers will be available for your use during the event. Unless specifically stated otherwise, texts are NOT included in the cost of the event. However, most of these texts may be purchased if you wish to take them with you. The PK shop will be open during this event to handle all purchases. If you do not wish to purchase the texts and/or prayers, please do not write in them and return them at the end of the event. As these texts are sacred, they should be treated with the utmost respect. They should not be placed directly on the floor, stepped over or have anything placed on top of them.

Dana

The requested fees for events held at Pemakilaya help cover the costs of such events but usually DO NOT compensate the teachers for their teachings. As a gesture of appreciation, it is customary to make a separate 'dana' offering to the teacher at the end of the teachings. We have envelopes for these offerings and, if you forget your own, khatags may be available for sale via the PK shop or you may find someone to borrow from.

Checks to be offered to Rinpoche should be made out to Tsultrim Dorje or left blank.

Eating Establishments

There are numerous restaurants near Pemakilaya as well as a QFC grocery store on the corner of Broadway and Pike. Coffee spots are abundant, especially up on Madison and down on Broadway. Click the restaurant link to see a map of the general area.

Staying Overnight in Seattle

Hotels and Motels near Pemakilaya - Google Listings

More comprehensive options are available through Travelocity.com. We recommend them as they have a good selection of less expensive alternatives, include customer reviews and they allow sorting by price.

Nearby, the most affordable lodging may be at the Baroness Hotel. They mostly cater to those visiting the nearby medical facilities.

Otherwise, the less expensive accomodations seem to be located out toward the airport (10-15 miles), but you'll need a car to get back and forth. Be sure to read the reviews before booking. One of those recently receiving fairly decent reviews has been the Sleep Inn Seatac Airport. Some places include breakfast in the price - others don't. Factor that into things when evaluating price.

In town, you'll notice that accommodations tend to be much more pricey.

There are Hostels in Seattle. The only one to recommend is the Hostelling International located downtown near Pike Place Market
